Recently, I had the opportunity to read Intuitive Eating, an insightful and reassuring guide to finding your natural weight. Authors Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch console the lifelong dieter, and offer strategies to assist in the transformation of adversarial feelings and thoughts often associated with food, diet and weight loss.
Tribole and Resch define the Intuitive Eater as one who can identify and channel their inner hunger cues. Whether it be carrots or cheesecake, the Intuitive Eater sees all food the same, knowing when they have had enough to eat and when to push the plate away.
The book sites examples of clients they have guided through the Intuitive Eating Process. They have worked with men, women, young, old, exercise fanatics and those with eating disorders. The reader is able to identify with these clients, connecting with their feelings and easily drawing comparisons to their own struggles.
Sadly, so many of us have an unhealthy relationship with food. In a society where things needed to be done yesterday, the need for immediacy in weight loss is far too common. This book reminds us that we did not gain this weight overnight, therefore, we can not expect it to immediately disappear either.
The Highlight
The idea of never dieting again is VERY appealing. Who likes to limit their food choices? Who enjoys not ordering dessert or passing up food at a dinner party all in the name of “skinny jeans”? This book gives the reader a step-by-step guide as to how to make dieting a thing of the past.
The Challenge
For the long-term dieter, it may be difficult to really understand your inner hunger cues. Breaking the dieting mentality can feel overwhelming, especially when we are expected to place “good” food and “bad” food on a level playing field. In addition, the idea of being allowed to eat whatever you want may lead some who have deprived themselves to overeat. Since there is no longer a tracking system (calories, points, macronutrients, etc), it may take awhile to really learn to honor your inner hunger.
The Bottom Line
Overall, I highly recommend this book to the person who is willing to give this 100% effort. This type of lifestyle must be very deliberate until it becomes second nature. If you are tired of the yo-yo feeling that is often accompanied with dieting, this is a good place to start your intuitive journey.

Thanks for the lovely review of Intuitive Eating and for crediting the book. I so appreciate your thoughts. If you don’t already know about our new audio version, I think you’ll love it. It’s not a verbatim reading of the book, but a discussion format presented by me and my co-author, as well as guided practices for all of the principles. Enjoy! Elyse Resch
Hi Elyse,
Thanks so much for stopping by! I haven’t yet listened to the audio version, which sounds interesting. I will have to check it out. I actually prefer audio books because I can listen to them during my cardio sessions.
