The package states the following tid-bits of information

F is for Fiber. It’s amazing how much fiber a little flaxseed contains. Just two tablespoons of flaxseed meal delivers 4 grams of fiber, as much fiber as 1-1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal! Studies suggest that when flaxseed meal is added to the diet, harmful LDL cholesterol drops, while good HDL cholesterol stays put. Regularity improves, also.

L is for Lignans. Here’s where the flaxseed story gets major points. Flaxseed contains high levels of natural antioxidants called lignans. The lignans in flaxseed can bind with circulating substances that might promote unchecked cell growth. Many plant foods have some lignans, but flaxseed has at least 75 times more than any other. To get the lignans that are in just two tablespoons of flaxseed meal, you’d need to eat about 30 cups of fresh broccoli.

A is for Alpha-linolenic Acid: Modern diets – even healthy ones – are routinely deficient in omega-3s. Flaxseed is a mega-source for the plant version of omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid. The oil in flaxseed is about 50% alpha-linolenic acid. Canola and walnut oils, the next highest source, have about 10%. But most foods have far less. One serving of flaxseed meal contains 2400 milligrams of omega-3.

X is for Excellent choice. Should you consider adding flaxseed meal to your diet? “Absolutely,” say many doctors and nutritionists.

My Thoughts

If you are familiar with my recipes you are well aware of the fact that I love flaxseed meal. I use it in a wide variety of my recipes, from my daily bowl of oats, to bars, to savory dishes like pizza crust and breading for my fish and chicken. One of my favorite uses is in place of a portion of the flour in my recipes.

I have tried many kinds of flaxseed meal, but Bob’s Red Mill has far become my favorite. I love that it is dense, a little nutty in flavor, and it is a great addition to whatever recipe I add it to. It helps to make me feel full quicker and longer, due to the high fiber content. I also really like the texture of this brand. It reminds me of smashed up graham crackers. I like this consistency over other brands, which can be a little more harsh and crunchy, and in my experience, it has always been very fresh.

A little goes a long way too, at 16 oz per package, this offers 34 servings per bag! And on top of that, you can buy it in bulk and freeze it.

On a side note, I also appreciate the health benefits. For me… I have finicky hormones, which means that I really need to make sure that I get in my fats, which play a huge role in happy hormones.

do you know the difference between the golden flaxseed and the regular flaxseed?? i’ve been wondering this after seeing this product

Hi Ashley – The nutritional difference between the two is really negligable. The only real difference that I have found is taste/texture. Golden flaxseed has more of a buttery, nutty flavor and the outer shell seems softer than the dark. Otherwise, they are basically just two different colors of the same seed.

This is the flaxseed meal I use regularly and I highly recommend it. I like the taste of the golden and it shows up less in baked goods, so people don’t notice you snuck it in.

How long does the flaxseed meal keep fresh? Should I freeze half of the pack?

AC – I store mine in the freezer in a zip top bag, and just take it out, use what I need, and put it back.
